Centre shortlists 155 candidates for Padma awards Updated on : 11-01-2017 10:36 AM
The Union Home Ministry has shortlisted 155 candidates for this year's Padma awards, focusing on "unsung" figures associated with issues highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The names were firmed up at a meeting on January 5 of the selection committee.

Public figures associated with the areas or issues raised by the Prime Minister during his radio programme Mann ki Baat have been given prominence in the list of shortlisted candidates.

This is the first time nominations were invited online and the ministry had received around 5,000 entries, including those from states.

The awards - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri - will be announced on the eve of the Republic Day.
