BJP wins Floor Test in Manipur AssemblyUpdated on : 20-03-2017 09:39 PM
Days after being appointed as Manipur Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh proved his majority on the floor of the Manipur Assembly on Monday with 32 MLAs including a Congress MLA voting for the BJP-led alliance.

Manipur's first BJP Chief Minister won the vote of confidence a day after the United Naga Council, Central and state govt. agreed to lift the economic blockade from Manipur.

With the BJP delivering on its pre-poll promise within days of forming govt. in the state, life returned to normal in the state after over four months of blockade even as two United Naga Council leaders were released under the terms of agreement to lift blockade.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh proving his majority on the floor of the Manipur Assembly and normalcy returning to the land-locked state with economic blockade being lifted.

He won the vote of confidence through a voice vote which saw 32 legislators vote in favour.

During the trust vote, 20 BJP MLAs, four legislators each of NPP and NPF and one legislator each of LJP and TMC besides an Independent and a Congress MLA voted for the government.

The Congress MLA defied the party whip and cross-voted in favour of the BJP-led alliance.

But even before the floor test, the N Biren Singh-led govt delivered on its first promise to the people of Manipur by lifting an over four-month-long economic blockade.

The decision was taken at tripartite talks between the United Naga Council, and representatives of the Central and Manipur government on Sunday.

The blockade on two national highways -- NH-2 and NH-37-- had led to steep rise in prices of essential commodities and severely affected normal life in the state. It became a major issue in the recently held assembly polls in the state besides maintenance of territorial integrity of Manipur.

A joint statement, issued after tripartite talks on Sunday stated that there would be unconditional release of the arrested UNC leaders and all cases related to the economic blockade against the Naga tribe leaders and student leaders will be closed.

It also stated that the next round of tripartite talks would be held within a month at the political level.

In Delhi, Union Ministers hailed the breakthrough saying that it is a matter of pride that the BJP govt. in Manipur has fulfilled the commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the election campaign and with the economic blockade gone, the situation will ease.

Manipur is the third North-eastern state where BJP-led alliance is in power besides Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

With its first promise to the people of Manipur fulfilled, all eyes are on how the state govt. will realise its vision for holistic development of the state and further integrate northeast into the mainstream of development.
