In a major decision, the Punjab cabinet has decided to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in all government jobs.

Women will be given the reservation also in the contractual appointments of the state government. The decision was taken in the first Cabinet meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh in Chandigarh.

Re-affirming the Punjab Congress's commitment towards empowerment of women, the cabinet also decided to increase their representation in the Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies from the present 33 per cent to 50 per cent.

The Punjab Cabinet has put a ban on the use of red beacons on government vehicles, foreign travel of ministers for two years and hosting banquets at state expense, in a bid to end VIP culture in Punjab.
