Many banks did not operate ATMs running on old software in view of the threat from ransomware 'WannaCry'. This is a malware that encrypts all data on your computer.

Microsoft no longer supports Windows versions which are older than Windows 7, but patches are available for higher versions.

The RBI had asked banks to follow the instructions of the govt's Computer Emergency Response Team, which has come out with a list of dos and don’ts on how to protect networks from the global ransomware attack. Govt says there is not much impact on India.

No serious impact on India from a global ransomware cyber-attack, except for a few isolated incidents in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, that's what the government had to say. Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the systems run by the National Informatics Centre were secured and running smoothly.

Meanwhile, Indian Computer Emergency Response Team has issued list of dos and don'ts on how to protect networks from the global ransomware attack.

RBI has also asked banks to put in place software updates at ATMs to protect their systems from attack. Cyber Crime experts are seeking strong legislation to punish the perpetrators of such attacks.

On another note, Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed United States of America for the global cyber-attack as thousands more computers in China and Japan were hit by ransomware on Monday after it crippled UK's national health services on Friday.
