South African city Durban stripped of the right to host 2022 Commonwealth Games over its government's inability to provide financial guarantees.

Durban has been stripped of the 2022 Commonwealth Games after failing to meet key obligations.

A review by the Commonwealth Games Federation expressed disappointment the information submitted by the South African city was a "significant departure" from undertakings provided in the original bid.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will no longer be held in Durban, South Africa. Last month, the South African sports minister Fikile Mbalula had indicated the city may not be able to host the event because of financial constraints.

Durban was awarded the right to host the Games in 2015 as the only city to make a confirmed bid. It would have been the first African host of the event.

The decision to recall the games follows from speculations that the event organisers had missed several submission deadlines with the Commonwealth Games Federation.

The Federation announced after an extensive review that Durban could not meet significant undertakings outlined in their original bid for the 2022 Games, and accordingly the Federation would consider options, including an alternate host city.

The Commonwealth Games Federation reportedly met in London‚ during which the fate of Durban as the host city was discussed for close to two hours.

Finally, Durban was stripped of the right to stage the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Monday after a trail of missed deadlines and financial problems that highlights the daunting burdens facing host cities for major sporting events.

It may be recalled that Durban was the only city to launch a formal bid to host the Games after Edmonton in Canada withdrew. No replacement has been named, although Liverpool were eager to offer their services.

However, reports of an Australian city also willing to step in at short notice are rife, although this would mean consecutive Commonwealth Games in the same country as Gold Coast are due to stage next year's event.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held on the Gold Coast in Australia. A search to find a new city to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games is set to be launched soon.
