Team India coach - Shastri or Sehwag? A million dollar question

Team India coach - Shastri or Sehwag? A million dollar questionUpdated on : 04-07-2017 07:28 PM
While former team director Ravi Shastri and former opener Virender Sehwag are considered frontrunners for the job of India coach, the battle is definitely getting interesting with former West Indies coach Phil Simmons applying for the position.

With the BCCI extending the last date for submission of applications to 9th July, a few more interesting names are expected to join the race. Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar is banking on former Indian team director Ravi Shastri to win the bid for India's next coach.

With Virat Kohli and team coming to an end of their five-match ODI series and only T20I remaining against West Indies, the talk for the appointment of the new coach is gaining pace with each passing day.

After former India team coach Anil Kumble stepped down, the post has been empty for almost a month now. Several players have applied to grab the vacant position. The latest to apply for the post is former Indian coach Ravi Shastri.

The former Indian captain who enjoys the backing of Kohli is said to be the frontrunner to take up the post despite having competition with the likes of Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, Dooda Ganesh, Richard Pybus and Phil Simmons.

The BCCI on May 25 had invited applications for the position of the head coach. However, the BCCI invited fresh applications and the deadline was extended to July 9, which had caused a furore.

It was believed that Tom Moody or Sehwag would be the last two standing but with a surprise entry of Shastri, the table has turned in his favour. The Cricket Advisory Committee of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly will pick the new coach on July 10 in Mumbai, right before team India's tour of Sri Lanka.

Shastri's return though will not be as easy as it appears. The former Team Director had an ugly showdown with Cricket Advisory Committee member Sourav Ganguly after his candidature was rejected last time.

Shastri had accused Ganguly of not being present when he had given his interview via Skype. Ganguly on the other hand had criticised Shastri for not meeting the Cricket Advisory Committee in person. He was the director of the team between 2014 and 2016 during which time he led India to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2015.

Shastri had also applied for the job last year but Anil Kumble, who resigned as India last month, was preferred.
